Abortion is a highly controversial topic in today’s society. The question of whether or not having an abortion is right or moral is still a huge debate. There is no clear answer to this question due to abortion being a case by case issue. Each individual’s situation and reasoning is different. Throughout this essay, I am going to prove that in the eyes of a utilitarian, abortion is right and moral as long as it improves the happiness and welfare of the individual receiving the aborting. Improving the lives of the people around the individual receiving the abortion also supports the ethical system of utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is the theory that you can decide if something is a right act as long as it follows the certain guideline. The guideline is the act has to improve the happiness and welfare of the individual committing the act. The goal of these right acts are to maximise the overall happiness of human beings. One must decide on whether or not to commit the act based on the results of the outcome. If the outcome is beneficial to the welfare of people than it is moral. If the outcome brings happiness to people than it is moral. This nominative ethical system creates a very black and white way to answer life’s harder questions. Abortion is the common medical procedure of removing a fetus to avoid having to carry through with a pregnancy. There are two ways to terminate a pregnancy. The first way is by taking an abortion pill. The abortion pill is made up of two separate pills of two drugs, Mifepristone and Misoprostol. The pill can be taken up to 10 weeks into the pregnancy. It cases a reaction to the fetus and simulates something as close to a natural miscarriage as possible. (plannedparenthood.org) These medications can be taken in the privacy of the individual’s home. The second method of abortion is a medical procedure that is performed in the safety of a clinic. This procedure is done by removing the fetus by using suction. This option can be performed 14 to 16 weeks into the pregnancy (planned parenthood.org) . However, after that time frame, most doctors will not perform an abortion due to the development of the fetus and safety reasons for the mother. Each option effectively removes the fetus and stops a pregnancy from progressing and future. Abortion is legal in every state although there are heavy rules and regulations that doctors and clinics must follow. So is abortion moral and right? According to utilitarianism, it is. If we look at it from a utilitarian point of view, the mother is the individual and aborting the fetus is the act in question. We must examine if aborting the fetus improves the welfare of the mother. In some cases, the mother chooses to abort the baby due to health problems or concerns. If this is the case than abortion improves the welfare of the mother and it is considered moral and therefore right. In other cases, women having an abortion chose to carry through with the procedure due to the fact that becoming pregnant was a result of being raped. If this is the situation in question then having that baby may cause numerous amounts of emotional pain and an unhealthy state of mind for the mother. Having a constant reminder of the rape does not improve the welfare of that individual. Therefore the act of having the procedure must be moral. If the individual is simply not ready to have kids yet then terminating the pregnancy would save the individual numerous amounts of stress and improve the welfare of the individual. If the outcome of having the baby results negatively at all for the other, then have an abortion is right. Having a baby you weren’t ready for or you were forced into due to circumstances like rape would hinder that individuals happiness. One of the guidelines is that the act must bring happiness not take it away. This means that for some reason if having a baby is going to hurt the individual’s happiness then it must be right to have an abortion. Having the abortion would result in the individual’s happiness improving instead of diminishing. Not only is the individual choosing to have the abortion directly affect, but also the imidate people in her life. For example, if having a kid not only takes away the happiness of the mother but also the father, then having the abortion must be a right act. If it improves the lives of many it must be good. If a couple is not financially ready for a kid and having a kid would seriously affect their lives in a negative way, for example not being able to afford proper healthcare, then having that kid would affect both of their welfare negatively. In this case, an abortion would result in better welfare for both individuals and the act would be for the greater good and must be considered moral and right. If the abortion improves the happiness of both the dad and the mom by saving them countless amounts of stress than it must be considered a right act due to the fact that it’s the best thing for both of them. If the act in question improves the lives of the many over the lives of a few then it must be the best thing to do in that situation. Although some highly controversial issues are very hard to debate, by considering an ethical approach to sort out ideas it may be clear as to what the right thing to do is. Not every topic is so easy to answer however but breaking the problem down like utilitarianism does help create a more black and white path to take. Abortion in the eyes of a utilitarian must be right and moral because it improves the overall happiness and welfare of the individual and the others involved as well.
