Burger King, the national franchise, is banned from opening a restaurant within 20 miles of Mattoon, Illinois. So, there is not a Burger King there; no problem, right? Not so fast! In the late 1950s, Gene and Betty Hoots trademarked the iconic name. Well, they trademarked it in Illinois at least. When the national company decided to open a chain close by, the Hoots sued and won their case. However, the national chain was able to keep the name Burger King, but the Hoots were also able to keep the name in accordance with the stipulation that the national chain could not open a store within a 20- mile radius of the original store in Mattoon, Illinois.

However, several years ago, the federal government considered a plan to eliminate NIAAA as a separate agency and to merge it with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in a new institute on addiction research. Many researchers and practitioners in the area of alcohol studies opposed this merger. They argued that there is a continuing need for NIAAA because alcohol-related problems are in some ways more serious and fundamentally different from the problems associated with other addictive drugs.

Although the merger plan was cancelled in 2012, I do think this is an excellent opportunity to discuss what you have learned so far about the distinctive nature and heavy cost of alcohol problems in the U.S. In an initial post of 200 words or more, draw upon material assigned for the first week of class to argue for (or against) a separate agency dealing with alcohol problems. What makes alcohol different from other drugs in terms of its costs to society or the harmful consequences of its use and misuse?
