The red team conducted penetration testing on the Sifers-Grayson campus-wide network. The team identified several weak security areas at Sifers-Grayson that could make it extremely easy for bad guys to infiltrate the network and steal critical information that the company holds. The following includes, but is not limited to, the findings the team identified:

  • Lack of security in the R&D DevOps lab made it easy for the Red Team to infiltrate the Supply cage and implant malware on to backup devices;
  • The Red Team was able to do sneaker net attacks by infiltrating the test range, and, with a malicious program installed on portable share drives like USBs, plugging them into the servers at the R&D center (Wang, 2006);
  • Lack of security awareness training for employees, made it easy for the red team to effectively utilize a Social engineering toolkit to identify those weaknesses associated with any kind of social engineering attacks, such as phishing, java applet attacks, etc. (Trustedsec, 2017); and
  • RF-Net threats identified by using Bastille technology to scan the entire Sifers-Grayson radio technology. There was no security, so the Red team was able to utilize vulnerabilities in the wireless, cellular and IoT devices (Security, 2017).

Identifying these critical areas of improvement will help the network administrators address the vulnerabilities and enhance security for the company. It’s important to remember that the lessons learned from the Red Team testing is valuable and should not be penalized. It’s always better to find the gaps during a penetration test than during a real-world attack.
