Part 1

One page and a half! As our reading from Pollock this week suggests, ethical issues are an ongoing subject discussed and reviewed in the field of law enforcement. Addressing moral and ethical decisions are a vital component of this profession. Minnesota law enforcement officers are required to understand and apply ethical reasoning. Ethics and ethical decision making is thoroughly addressed in the Minnesota POST Board curriculum. The Minnesota POST Board is responsible for the certification of law enforcement agencies and law enforcement officers in the state of Minnesota.

Initial Post: Discuss why you think moral and ethical reasoning are part of the Minnesota POST curriculum. Research different law enforcement agency mission statements. In your research, include a minimum of one large sized department mission statement and one small sized department mission statement. Your post should include the quoted mission statement and the city and department name the mission statement came from. Reflect on what ethical language, values, morals, etc. might be reflected in their mission statement. How might a department’s mission statement guide ethical conduct for officers?

In your initial post, you will be required to cite a minimum of one professional source of information.

Response Post: When responding to your peers, compare and contrast their findings with yours. Do your findings differ in any way? Are they similar in any way? Do these statements vary in large vs. smaller agencies? If so, why do you think there is a variation?

Part 2

Read and consider the following scenario: You are a law enforcement officer working a weekday overnight shift. You are currently off probation and have been work with the agency for just over one year. It is a slow call night with very little going on. Your partners are either tied up with paperwork or are on non-emergency calls. You observe a vehicle stopped at a green light. Right before the light cycles and turns yellow, the vehicle proceeds through the intersection. You decide to make a traffic stop.

When you walk up to the vehicle, you immediately recognize that the driver is one of the city council members appointed and working for the city where you work. Their significant other is sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle. You can smell a strong order of alcohol coming from the vehicle. Both the driver and passenger have bloodshot and watery eyes. The driver has slurred speech.

Note: Other officers have commented to you that the city administrators come from “a good ole boy” era. Rumors of cover ups and “sweeping things under the rug” have cycled during your new career with the city.

In a 2 page paper research and discuss the following:

First, briefly explain how the application of ethical systems can assist with solving dilemmas presented in law enforcement.

Second, solve this ethical dilemma using each of these three ethical systems: Ethics of Virtue, Ethical Formalism, and Utilitarianism. You are to address and discuss three different solutions by applying each of these three ethical systems. Do these outcomes vary? If yes, it what ways?

Lastly, how do you plan on handling the aftermath of the decision/s that you have made?

Your essay should incorporate a minimum of one scholarly resource from the Rasmussen online library or credible internet source, such as a government website or professional organization.
