Read Ch. 1 including Edward Taylor’s “The Preface” poem. Taylor’s metaphors of God’s creativity range from a carpenter’s lathe or a smith’s forge to a builder laying stones to a quilter or interior decorator! In many of the origin stories from cultures around the world, the first movement of existence of the universe is embodied by a Supreme Deity-one who either stands within/without of his/her Creation. How do these metaphors of creation as a kind of building or making relate to the idea of a purpose for humankind within the story? What expectations might you have for your own role within such a story? There may be some of you who question/deny the very idea of some transcendent figure like a god-how do you reconcile your own understanding of these stories in our own history as human beings? What purpose do these stories aim for in our cultures?
