Cultural competency can have a direct impact on care. Various cultures have their own unique way of perceiving illness, disease and healing (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014). Order Paper NowThe American Nurses Association (ANA) who sets the standards for nursing practice and standards has added a standard eight to address cultural competency and the importance of adding this is our nursing process (Marion L, 2018). We need to not only incorporate cultural competency in our daily practice but also assess our own beliefs so we are aware of how our beliefs may impact our teaching and care especially when our values may be very different.
A study was done regarding the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community with respect to cultural competency. The study concluded that their healthcare disparities included fear of discrimination, lack of access to care and lack of culturally competent care (S., 2018). LGBT patient and families have unique needs and support networks and it is important us for as nurses to provide non-judgmental care in a hospitable environment. These actions improve health equality which is why cultural competency is so important.
We would like to believe that as a society we have evolved and cultural barriers are not as prevalent as we thought but the truth is, they continue to exist and have become more complex.
