Sample Annotation and Point Distribution (do this for each article, but double-spaced!):

Hilsenroth, M. J., Ackerman, S. J., Blagys, M. D., Baity, M. R., & Mooney, M. A. (2003). Short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy for depression: An examination of statistical, clinically significant, and technique-specific change. The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 191,349-357.

Theory / Background: The authors aimed to replicate and extend prior studies that have shown psychodynamic therapy to be an effective short-term treatment for depression. In particular, this was the first study to examine social and occupational functioning outcomes after the treatment.

(graded as 0, 1⁄2, 1, or 1.5 points)

Hypotheses: The authors hypothesized that psychodynamic therapy would lessen depressive symptoms and dysfunction with a moderate to large effect size.

(graded as 0, 1⁄2, 1, or 1.5 points)

Sample: The hypothesis was assessed in a sample of 21 adults diagnosed with major depression. The sample was evenly distributed across gender and romantic relationship status (i.e., married, divorced, single). Approximately half of the sample was comorbid with a personality disorder.

(graded as 0, 1⁄2, 1, or 1.5 points)

Study Procedure: The authors used clinical graduate students to provide STTP therapy to the participants. STTP therapy emphasizes emotion processing, wish fulfillment and dreams, the client- therapist relationship, and explores the client’s past experiences and their attempts to avoid certain things. The treatment’s effectiveness was assessed in client self-reports and therapist evaluations using checklists and ratings of depression symptoms and social adjustment.

(graded as 0, 1⁄2, 1, or 1.5 points)

Results: Results provided support for the authors’ hypothesis: depressive symptoms and social and occupational functioning improved to a large degree.

(graded as 0, 1⁄2, 1, or 1.5 points)

Implications of Results: This study’s results are meaningful because they found improvement of depression symptoms was directly associated with treatment behaviors that reflect psychodynamic therapy, including the importance of the client-therapist relationship, the role of past experience, wishes, and avoidance behaviors. Moreover, clients appeared to be satisfied and rarely dropped out of therapy, suggesting that clients will likely comply with the therapy.
